BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS: 1911 2 1/2d ultramarine Used to Japan .tied by TULAGI BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS 23 DE 13 c.d.s. on off white envelope, on reverse, blue imprint BURNS, PHILIP COMPANY MAKAMBO (flap tear) . Ex. Bromberg.

Very rare destination. Burns, Phillip was formed in the 1870s and originally concentrated on Australian passenger and cargo coastal trade. In the 1890s trade expanded to the Pacific Islands. The company survived in shipping until 1970 by which time it had disposed of most of its ships and diversified into other industries. They purchased Makambo Island for $30 pounds in 1908 to become to company headquarters in the Solomon Islands.
