UNITED STATES: Postal History; 1870’s Bank Note Issues used to Japan ;Group of 14 envelopes , from the Benjamin Lyman correspondence (no enclosures). From Northampton Mass to Yokohama or Yedo, 5 with 10c brown, 4 with 15c orange, 4 with 1c, 2c, 3c, combinations, 6 with Japanese transits or receivers, two forwarded. Condition varies but a rare group to a famous man .

Benjamin Smith Lyman was an American mining engineer, surveyor and amateur anthropologist. He was hired by the Japanese government to survey the coal and oil deposits. From 1873 to 1879 he was the chief geologist to the Meiji government.
