CAPE OF GOOD HOPE: Stampless; 1822 folded letter in Dutch, datelined Capstadt “15 May 1822” bearing “INDIA LETTER/HASTINGS.” ,ms. “1/8” and per “Kingston”. Addressed to Frederick Huth & Company, a London bank, on reverse red London 28 Aug 22 receiver and large and virtually complete, PALLAS POLEMANN, red wax seal. Very early correspondence .

The East Indiaman, “KINGSTON”, Capt. Bown, arrived Gravesend on the 29th August 1822 from Bengal, Madras, Cape Town and St. Helena. Mails were landed at Hastings and arrived in London on the 28th. This letter bearing the framed INDIA LETTER HASTINGS was written at Cape Town on the 31st May taking 90 days to reach London. The Kingston was in service from 1819-1822 and made only 2 voyages. She weighed 504 Tons.
