A heart-wrenching letter from prisoner?s wife talking about their young children, her worry and lonesomeness. Stalag Luft #1 was located on the Baltic Sea just outside Barth, Germany about 105 miles northwest of Berlin. The camp began to receive American fliers in 1943. More than 7700 American prisoners and 1400 British prisoners spent time at this POW camp. On May 1, 1945, just over 3 weeks after the prisoner?s wife mailed this letter, with Russian soldiers advancing, the Germans abandoned the camp. The Russians took over the camp for about two weeks when American troops arrived and they released the prisoners.
