Postage stamps encased in a brassy-metal housing were patented on August 12, 1862, John Gault. His ‘Design for Encasing Government Stamps’ to alleviate a severe shortage of coins. His enterprise sold 750,000 pieces, only 3,500-7,000 are believed to have survived.
