UNITED STATES: 1851 3c red type 1 : margins mostly all around showing a portion of adjacent stamp at left (acting as a forwarder) tied by blue CHARLESTON OCT 22 PAID c.d.s. on a somewhat tatty envelope bearing GB 1s embossed, red AM PACKET OCT 18 PAID 24, London Oct 6, 2 red 21 markings, on reverse partial British handstamp, forwarder to Black Rock, Henderson, “NoCa” . A partial letter enclosed referring to returning, “Thursday Afternoon 18th just got home from Notre Dame where the Emperor and all Paris went to ring ___ ___ in gratitude for the possession of Sebastopol ” dating the letter as 1855. A wonderful and perhaps unique combination at a historical time.
