Henry Dearborn served as the Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson and was a commanding general in the War of 1812. Fort Dearborn was named in his honor. Quite ironically, the letter is written to Captain William Linnard who was elected as the President of the Carpenter’s Company. Dearborn’s letter informs Linnard that officers are not allowed any more furniture than an regular soldier.
